Roland Toogood is a Certified Lymphedema Therapist and is a member of LAOSA (Lynphedema Association of South Africa) and WHASA (Wound Healing Association of Southern Africa).
He works with patients who suffer from Lymphedema which is commonly caused by the removal of or damage to the lymph nodes as a part of cancer treatment. The resultant blockage in the lymphatic system, which is part of your immune system, prevents lymph fluid from draining well, and the fluid build-up leads to swelling.
The swelling caused by lymphedema ranges from mild, hardly noticeable changes in the size of the arm or leg to extreme changes that make the limb hard to use. Lymphedema caused by cancer treatment may not occur until months or years after treatment. There’s no cure for lymphedema. But it can be managed with early diagnosis and diligent care of the affected limb.
One in five individuals who receives conventional breast cancer treatment will be affected by lymphedema.
