What is Orthotics?
Orthotics involves precision and creativity in the design and fabrication of external braces (orthoses) as part of the patient’s treatment process. The orthosis acts to control weakened or deformed areas of the body of a physically challenged person. Orthoses may be used on various areas of the body including the upper and lower limbs, cranium or spine.
Common orthotic interventions include Ankle foot orthoses (AFO) used in the rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy. More recently orthoses have been designed to realign the bones of the skull in infants with positional plagiocephaly.
Back pain can occur due to damaged bones, ligaments and muscles of the spine.
A variety of belts and back braces are available to assist patients with lower back pain, post-op braces and maternity belts.
