CUSTOM MADE FOOT ORTHOTICS
Custom-made foot orthotics are made using the latest in foot orthotic technology. With one of the most advanced gait labs in the Eastern Cape, we are able to analyse the pressure areas of the patient’s foot as well as the dynamic views of the patient’s gait cycle.
This technology allows us to analyse and treat the patient’s foot problem by using the 3 dimensional images taken on the CAD CAM system to design the custom foot orthotic and manufacture it using the single head milling machine.
Biomechanical Assessment
The RS Scan is implemented to determine the patients stride length, the highest peak pressure point areas under the foot, pronation and supination together with the movement of the ankle.
During this assessment, four high-speed Quintic cameras are activated to record the foot’s movement. Replaying the recording in slow motion (frame for frame) allows us to measure the amount of pronation that each foot has enabling us to manufacture a foot orthotic with extreme accuracy.
3D Foot Scan
This fifteen second procedure uses a 3D Foot Scan device to take a 3 dimensional image of the plantar surface of your foot with an accuracy of up to 1:1000 of a millimeter.
This information is used to determine the patients exact foot dimensions including the arch height, and is of immense importance, as it allows for the manufacture of a full contact orthotic to ensure optimum comfort.
CAD CAM Design
Utilising all the data obtained from the biomechanical assessment and the 3D Foot Scan, the problem areas of the foot are identified.
The CAD CAM is used to make adaptions and corrections to the patients orthotic within tolerances of 0.1mm, thereby allowing for a greater level of control and accuracy, resulting in a higher level of patient comfort.
Manufacturing
The completed design is transferred to the on-site milling machine where the orthotic is manufactured in under 20 minutes.
Finishing and Fitting
The orthotic is then sanded until it is smooth and custom fitted to the patient’s shoe.
